Boris Chimp 504 - Miguel Neto (Sound) and Rodrigo Carvalho (Visuals & Interactive Systems) - tells the tale of Boris 504, a chimpanzee sent to the moon by the soviets in 1969 getting stuck in space forever. Since then he has been exploring the space-time continuum, jumping between several dimensions of the universe. With this starting point, Miguel & Rodrigo have been exploring the relation between sound & image since 2010 mixing techno, psychedelia and noise, along with audio-reactive visuals generated in real time, creating an immersive voyage strongly influenced by science fiction, interspersing with the most current scientific discoveries and merging reality and fiction into a narrative of its own.

Boris Chimp 504 has presented both av performance & interactive installations on festivals such as Sonar (Barcelona), Mutek.Es (Barcelona), ADAF (Athens), BAM (Liège), ECHO (Dubai), Stereolux (Nantes), Iminente (Lisbon) among many others.

RED SPECTRUM

AV Live Performance | 2024 - ... | Presented at FISGA (Porto)

Spitzer Space Telescope was an infrared observatory, used to study objects too cold to emit visible light, including exoplanets, brown dwarfs, comets, and asteroids. Despite halting its science operations in January 2020, it has recently and unexpectedly started transmitting... in the red spectrum! Besides this apparent malfunction of the abandoned telescope, it has also been transmitting data of uncanny mechanical structures and unknown bio-organisms.

This new Boris Chimp 504’s chapter explores new territories and space dimensions by adding a new color dimension to the monochromatic vision and merging organic and two-dimensional visuals with the usual 3D geometric-hard edges aesthetic. The audiovisual narrative follows up with Boris Chimp 504 voyages through outer space emerging the audiences in space exploration, science and technology themes, merging reality and fiction.

VANISHING QUASARS

AV Live Performance | 2019 - 2023 | Presented at ELECTROALTERNATIVE (Toulouse), FOTONICA (Rome), CRIATECH (Aveiro), and 948MERKABA (Pamplona) among others.

A quasar is an extremely luminous active galactic nucleus, but some have been noticed to be vanishing… rapidly.

Boris follows up his quest on exploring the vastness of the universe, and heads to the coordinates of the quasar WISE J1052+1519 in order to explore this event. The most recent data suggests that this phenomenon might be related to shape-shifting changes of the Quasar’s accretion disk, around the stellar supermassive black holes.

Divided in 3 Acts, “MULTIVERSE” tells the tale of Boris 504 – a chimpanzee sent to the moon by the soviets in 1969, that got stuck in space never coming back to Earth.

Since then Boris has been exploring the space-time continuum, jumping between several dimensions of the universe. An audiovisual real-time performance that mixes electronica, psychedelia and noise, along with audio-reactive visuals generated in real time, creating an immersive voyage between reality and fiction, between quantum physics and the best SciFi literature.

Future Sound of […] is a site specific interactive installation which explores the audiovisual landscape of a specific city.

The inhabitants of [insert city] are invited to enter in a dark room where the characteristic sounds of their city life. Through the exploration of the space, they may find changes in the space-time continuum that will modify these sounds, transforming them [or not] in hypothetic sounds of the future of [insert city]. Could these [new] sounds draw their future?

INTERWORLDS

AV Installation | Presented at LUZA Festival (Loulé 2018)

INTERWORLDS is an audiovisual installation where a composition of light, image and sound explores the intersections between a physical space and a virtual one. Therefore the audience can relate to the piece through the relation they build with a moving “audiovisual object”.

InterWorlds aims to make the public reflect on the relationship we currently have between the real and virtual world(s) and how increasingly the latter is present in our lives. InterWorlds can be understood as a portal to and from other worlds, a fine line between the real and the virtual, a synchronicity between this universe and [other] parallel worlds.

SCANNING THE SURFACE OF VALE TUDO

AV Installation | Presented at FESTIVAL IMINENTE (Lisboa 2018)

In June 2017, 12 more moons were found orbiting the planet Jupiter, to a total of 79. These are divided in three large groups: while the two groups that orbit nearer the planet do so in the direction of Jupiter’s rotation, the third rotates in the opposite direction and at a greater distance.

However, a moon was found in this distant group moving in the direction of the rotation of Jupiter, contrarily to all the surrounding moons. This peculiar characteristic makes it possible to predict an inevitable collision, reason why the scientists called it “Valetudo”. Boris is currently scanning its surface to try to get answers before it’s too late.

Visuals are running in real-time on VUO. Sound runs on Ableton Live and sends MIDI messages to control Visuals and Lights. Lights controlled with DMXIS USB controller (via OSC messages). VDMX is the big maestro, managing the different audiovisual scenes, and MIDI/OSC messages between Visuals, Lights and Sound.

Interactive sound and light installation where a public banstand was transformed into a spaceship. When someone approaches it a contact is established, permitting communication with mysterious characters that have been supposedly abducted from planet Earth decades ago.

Interactive system run by MAX, managing Kinect camera, sound on Ableton Live and Lights via DMXIS USB controller.

“NON HUMAN DEVICE #01” is an audiovisual installation based alien objects/devices found by Boris Chimp 504 during his missions through the deep space).
During a recent exploration to Kepler22b, an exoplanet from the Kepler-16 binary star system, Boris Chimp 504 found some metallic objects on its surface. Though the origin of this object is totally unknown, it’s probably a piece of technology from an extraterrestrial civilization. Boris has sent this object in an hyperspace capsule to the Vladivostok Space Center, on Earth.

It is believed that it’s a part of a machine, a mechanism or a device of some kind. Recent investigations on the object lead to believe that it is an interface to control the position and orientation in space and time of something bigger, a spaceship maybe. The device responds to touch, and generates an electric magnetic field that interferes with audiovisual signals and causes space-time distortions.

In this public installation, the audience will have the opportunity to interact with this “Non Human-Machine Device”, and experience the effects that it causes to audiovisual signals and space-time orientation.

Non Human Device #03 is the 3rd part of a series of interactive installations where experimental audiovisual devices are explored. INFINITE DELTA

AV Interactive Kinetic Installation/Performance | Presented at IX Encontro Internacional de Marionetas de Montemor-o-Novo (Montemor-o-Novo 2016).

Δ∞ [Infinite Delta] is an interactive kinetic installation/performance. A physical structure built by triangular planes and controlled by a series of servomotors. Reacting to the movement of the audience, sound and generative sequences, the structure reacts and modifies its shape.

In Euclidean geometry any three points, when non-collinear, form a unique triangle and determine a unique plane. Nevertheless, in quantum physics the string theory proposes that fundamental particles may also have similarities with a string. It also states that the universe is infinite and in it all matter is contained. In this “multiverse”, our universe would be just one of many parallel existent universes. What would happen then if we multiply triangles infinitely? Could [ou Would?] we have access to those parallel universes?

This show is the result of an artistic residency by Boris Chimp 504 + Alma D’Arame in December 2014, where an hybrid kinetic structure was created, between the physical and the virtual world.

By augmenting the physical world overlaying it into the digital world, a mixed/parallel reality was created where real elements interacted with virtual ones, in order to create new alternative, magic and hyper-sensorial landscapes to the observer.

RE-ENVISION is where BC504 & VAVA meet in outer space. It is a place where the space time continuum is not what it appears to be. The rules of known physics don’t work here. All that is seen/heard/felt can be something else…

RE-ENVISION is a collection of 6 audiovisual pieces that express VAVA brand guidelines:

– Post – industrial and futuristic landscapes;
– Mechanics and machines;
– The eye / the monocle / the vision;
– Faces – transformative reality;
– Basic shapes and geometries;
– Space and cosmos. The monolith.

RE-ENVISION exists as a digital EP, where the six audiovisual tracks can be watched and downloaded at the RE-ENVISON EP mini-site.

And also as an interactive installation where the audience entered an immersive dark shape where, through the manipulation of a tactile interface, they would travel the 6 different chapters, and experience, interact and transform the audiovisual phenomena taking place.

X-FILES’ ALIEN SPACESHIP

Interactive Light Installation | Presented at Estação do Oriente (Lisboa 2016)

Boris Chimp 504 was invited by Solid Dogma to create an interactive experience integrated with a crashed alien’s spaceship for the promotion of the The X-Files’ new season in Portugal.

The outcome was an interactive light and sound installation with choreographed moving lights in sync with the soundtrack. In front of the spaceship was also developed an interactive area that reacted to movement. When someone enters the activation zone, the moving lights rotate towards the “intruder”, the spaceship’s interior light up on green and the ‪XFiles‬’ melody is triggered

Installation composed by three diferent interactive areas. In each one a leap motion deviced allowed visitors to interact with a particle system on screen, manipulating visual and sound interactions.
